Ufficialmente annunciato da RedOctane il 2 Giugno 2008, Guitar Hero Metallica è stato pubblicato negli Stati Uniti il 29 marzo 2009 per console XBox 360 e PlayStation 3, ma in Europa è arrivato solamente nel mese di maggio 2009 (in Italia ieri, 22 maggio).

Con Guitar Hero Metallica tutti gli album della band saranno rappresentati da una o più tracce: la tracklist conta quasi 50 hit (49 per la precisione) dei Metallica e di altri 21 artisti personalmente selezionati dalla band (Queen, Foo Fighters, Alice in Chains, System of a Down...) con i quali i Metallica hanno effettivamente suonato, che apprezzano o da cui hanno tratto ispirazione. All'interno del videogioco sarà possibile avere informazioni sul legame tra i 21 artisti e i Metallica, sulla loro storia e sulle loro canzoni.
Guitar Hero Metallica è ricco di contenuti speciali, come video inediti di dietro le quinte dei Metallica.
